While operating a residential care home may involve more responsibility than other business sectors, it can be a rewarding and profitable endeavour. The move towards community-based care has been a challenge for the sector but with the number of people over the age of 85 expected to double in the next 25 years, there is likely to be a steady increase in demand for care home places. Although the government is reducing its own care home provision, it still has a commitment to funding - of those receiving nursing care in privately run homes, almost a quarter have their fees paid by the government. Across the sector, profit margins are slowly improving and there are growing opportunities for investment in new facilities.
