Well Established Cheese Mongers And Delicatessen On The High Street In An Affluent East Devon Town.
Sidmouth Seaton & Surrounding, Devon
Business overviewWe are selling our established, profitable business which has an enviable reputation and is based in one of the UK's most sought after locations.
This, leasehold, easily run and very profitable business is a cheese mongers and delicatessen located In arguably the most affluent town in East Devon.
lt was established over 40 years ago in an indoor market and we bought it fifteen years ago and brought it onto the High Street ten years ago, where it has flourished ever since.
We sold the business over five years ago but the buyers (due to family circumstances) asked to sell it back a little over two years ago. Since then it has once again flourished and is still growing as shown by the increase in turnover, as the quarter ending 28 February 2019 was nearly 32% up on the same quarter the previous year and there is a fully commercial website which has been, and still is, under utilized as I am not of the "blogging generation". For the same reason the business is not on Facebook or Twitter.
The business has two part time staff who are both fully trained and would be capable of running the business apart from the accounts.
We are a married couple and split the work. My wife orders the stock and serves behind the counter three days a week while I pay the bills, run the books and VAT (a VAT recipient of £4,791.50 over the last year and the premises are rates exempt).
The reason that I don't work in the shop is that shortly after we sold five years ago I became ill and the treatment caused me to lose a lot of weight, mostly muscle in my back and legs. I've (unfortunately) put most of the weight back on, but not as muscle so that I found out that I couldn't manage a full day in the shop. So our staff costs are higher than they were when we sold - over £10,000 higher - so for a healthy couple profits could be over £39,000 at current turnover. As stated above, turnover is increasing and the website is under developed as a selling tool - Facebook and Twitter are unused.
We would be happy to work along side you for a couple of weeks, free of charge, as a sort of training and support package and then be contactable by phone or email for any further advice. The business is a "take over and start making money immediately" proposition with no further start up costs.
We make joint decisions on new stock to keep the offering fresh.
Apart from cheese (about eighty five varieties) the shop also offers cold meats, other dairy products, a variety of Scotch Eggs plus sausage rolls and pasties (baked-off on site). Also chutneys, jams and marmalades from specialist artisan suppliers plus more "deli speciality" lines. There is also a range of glassware. Hampers are prepared and either picked up or sent by courier all over the country. It is not uncommon to get a phone call from Canada or Australia from someone who has been to the shop whilst visiting relatives and who then wants to send a hamper from the shop to them.
The business also has a "Cook" frozen food concession using six metres of freezer space. The profit on this alone pays half the rent.
From before Easter to late autumn we make sandwiches and rolls and have just installed a "bean to cup" coffee machine which is proving popular. Any purchaser would have the option of being more "hands on" and increasing profits or increasing staffing levels and still taking a good income for little work.
The website offers great potential.
We don't mind if you contact us via the website.
